The Alcohol Research Group, in partnership with the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley, offers a training program for pre- and postdoctoral fellows. The Program is sponsored by the NIAAA and offers research training to prepare fellows for successful careers in alcohol studies.

Training

Predoctoral Fellowship

Candidates for the predoctoral training program must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a campus of the University of California (UC). The research training at the predoctoral level is oriented toward the pursuit of alcohol-related social science, health services and epidemiological research. The Alcohol Research Group welcomes applications for our predoctoral fellowships on a rolling basis. Fellowships offer the opportunity to work with leaders in the field and can be critical stepping stones toward becoming an independent investigator in addictions research.

Predoctoral fellows will have an appointment with the Alcohol Research Group for a one-year term, which is renewable for a second year. Predoctoral fellows usually work out of their home offices. The predoctoral fellowship pays a monthly stipend, partial UC tuition and fees, as well as a travel allowance.

All predoctoral fellows are required to enroll in the "Advanced Alcohol Research Seminar," PH 202G through UC Berkeley, School of Public Health.

Applicants must be advanced to candidacy, i.e., have completed graduate course work and be involved in dissertation research. Completion of the dissertation is expected within the two-year maximum term of the predoctoral fellowship. Those requiring more than two years in order to complete their dissertation should wait until they are within a two-year window prior to applying.

Applications will be accepted anytime from U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of California.

Applicants must submit:

  • Cover letter.
  • Recent curriculum vitae.
  • Proposed dissertation outline or prospectus.
  • Description of the proposed research during the appointment.
  • Two letters of recommendation: one letter from the dissertation adviser and one other letter from a faculty member familiar with the applicant and the proposed research.
  • Time line representing milestones to be achieved that will lead up to the filing of the dissertation (both the applicant and the dissertation advisor must sign this time line).
  • Preferred ARG mentors, 1st & 2nd choices.
  • Optionally, state your race and ethnic group to which you identify (women and minorities are encouraged to apply).
