Training
Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Alcohol Research Group postdoctoral training program is oriented toward the pursuit of alcohol-related social science, health services, and epidemiological research. We accept applications for our postdoctoral fellowship on a rolling basis. There are usually 4 postdoctoral fellows in residence at any given time. The postdoctoral fellowship offers the opportunity to work with leaders in the field and can be a critical stepping stone toward becoming an independent investigator in addictions research.
The postdoctoral training program is appropriate for:
- Recent doctoral graduates wishing to increase their research experience and establish a publication record in alcohol studies.
- Established researchers seeking to make a transition to the alcohol studies field.
Scholars who are new to alcohol studies are welcome to apply. Recent doctoral graduates are eligible if they are seeking a transition from related fields of study or if they are continuing previous study in the field.
Applicants must satisfy all of the following specifications:
- Applicant must possess a PhD or foreign equivalent
- Proposed appointment may not total more than five years of service including previous postdoctoral experience at other institutions
- Applicant may not have been employed as an assistant professor, associate professor, or professor
The program offers both one-year and two-year fellowships:
- One-year fellowships are designed for experienced scholars or for recent doctoral graduates who feel prepared to launch directly into an alcohol-specific research project without spending an initial year of skill development.
- Two-year fellowships are designed for recent doctoral graduates, who will spend their first year developing and enhancing their research skills and knowledge in alcohol studies through a combination of structured course work and independent learning and their second year conducting an individual research project. Second year funding is contingent on the approval of a research project and on successful completion of the first year expectations: publish a paper from the dissertation, publish a literature review on an alcohol topic and complete a paper involving data analysis with a mentor. The project is to be proposed by the candidate at the end of the first year and conducted during the second year.
Annual compensation for postdoctoral trainees will range from $37,740 to $47,940 plus partial health benefits. Additional funds are available for travel expenses.
Applications will be accepted from U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have earned a doctoral degree, or are within 3 months of their filing date; applications are reviewed by the Research Fellowship Committee, which meets at regular intervals throughout the year. Please prepare your application using the "Postdoctoral Fellowship Application Requirements Checklist" and submit it to the email address below.
