30th Annual Alcohol Epidemiology Symposium of the Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol
Alcohol: Global Pressures, Local Concerns
Helsinki, Finland, May 31 – June 4, 2004

This information was taken from www.stakes.fi/kbs2004 on June 25, 2004  (site may or may not still be active).

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Symposium included discussions on submitted papers, prepared discussion sessions and topical workshops. The emphasis was on discussions; papers were pre-circulated and then introduced by the author with a 10-minute presentation prior to discussion initiated by a discussant.

The aim of this 30th Symposium was to have an in-depth look at the recent advances in social and epidemiological alcohol research and raise further research issues and opportunities, taking into account experiences from around the world. The scope of the Symposium was broadly defined to include studies of determinants of drinking, drinking practices, attitudes, and problems in general as well as in clinical populations, and the social and institutional responses to drinking-related problems. Papers based on empirical research and action research as well as theoretical and conceptual papers were welcome. Participants from the whole range of social and health sciences were expected.

Pre-symposium workshops were organized on Saturday and Sunday, 29th - 30th May. Anyone interested in organizing a workshop was asked to send a proposal to the following e-mail address: kbs2004@stakes.fi. Specific information about the workshops was available in the preliminary program.

Abstract and paper submission

Interested persons were invited to submit, by 15th February, 2004, an informative abstract of a paper, maximum of 250 words, to be considered for presentation at the Symposium.. The abstract was sent by e-mail to kbs2004@stakes.fi. or if e-mail submission is impossible, the abstract was sent on a disk, together with a paper transcript to:

Receipt of the abstract and its status was acknowledged by 1st March, 2004.

The full paper was to be no longer than 16 pages, including text, bibliography, tables and figures, and was due in Helsinki by April 1, 2004. It was sent as an MS Word file by e-mail to:kbs2004@stakes.fi. If this was impossible, it was sent on a disk together with a paper transcript to the above mailing address.

The conference fee was 200 EUR.

As is the long-standing convention at the annual KBS symposia, the local committee developed the program, selected participants to chair sessions and servde as discussants. It was important, therefore, that participants planned to be available for the five days -- that is, from the morning of 31st May until noon 4th June. The symposium program was developed and finalized, and presenters, chairpersons and discussants assigned based on the assumption that participants would be available for the full time.

Update information on this event including data on the location, hotels, post- and preconference trips was found on www.stakes.fi/kbs2004
